What is Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT)?

Updated: Feb 28

Understanding Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT)

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT), developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, is one of the most well-researched and effective forms of therapy for couples. It’s grounded in the well-established idea that the quality of our attachment relationships has a profound impact on our overall well-being and quality of life. When our closest relationships feel insecure, distant, or in conflict, it’s natural to experience emotional distress.

EFCT offers a path forward by helping couples understand the cycles of interaction that may be causing tension, enabling both partners to gain insight into each other’s experiences and emotions. This process fosters a deeper connection and a more meaningful bond. After completing my training, I truly believe that any relationship could benefit from this model of therapy, as it helps couples build the emotional intimacy necessary to thrive together.

Who Can Benefit from EFCT?

The beauty of EFCT lies in its versatility—it can be effective for any couple, regardless of the challenges they may face. The therapy works by understanding each couple’s unique story and the struggles they encounter. While there are EFCT models designed for families and individuals, the course I’ve trained in is specifically designed for couples.

That said, EFCT’s principles can be applied in various situations, as the approach is flexible and focused on understanding each person’s emotional needs. My office is a judgment-free space, and I welcome feedback from clients, as I am always striving to learn and improve in my practice.

How Does EFCT Work?

EFCT takes an experiential approach, which means that we not only discuss emotions but also actively engage in helping you feel supported emotionally. The therapy also focuses on teaching you how to support your partner in return. Dr. Sue Johnson’s carefully developed systemic approach provides a clear roadmap for couples to strengthen their emotional bond and communication. This allows couples to better navigate conflicts and develop a more secure attachment.
