What is Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT)?

I know, when you throw the word emotion into a title it sounds like it's going to be hard, well it could be but it could also be extremely helpful! EFCT was created by Dr. Sue Johnson, and is one of the most well-researched forms of couples' therapy, proven to be very effective. 'EFT is based on the now well-validated premise that the quality of our attachment relationships profoundly affects our sense of wellbeing and quality of life. When our most important relationships feel insecure, distant or in conflict, it is understandable that we become emotionally distressed. (2024, VCEFT)

We work together to figure out what types of cycles you may find yourself in with your partner and help you each gain a better understanding of the other person's experience. This creates a deeper and more meaningful bond - I left my training feeling like any relationship could benefit from this model of therapy! It helps you to deepen the relationship you have with the person you have chosen to spend your life with.

Who is EFCT For?

The beauty of EFCT is that it can quite easily work for any couple! It really tries to understand your unique story together and the struggles you find yourselves in! There are different courses to focus on families and individuals, the course I have taken is specifically designed with couples in mind. So, usually it is most effective in a relationship setting; however, it can work for different situations as well. I try my best to make sure that my office is a judgment-free zone, but appreciate it when I get called out on it - I am always learning myself.

How does it work?

EFCT uses an experiential approach, which means that we are showing you how it feels to be supported emotionally, but also how to support your partner as well. I use a systemic approach which Dr. Sue Johnson carefully created in order to give us a road map to help you and your partner develop that closer bond as we work together.
